Bilateral Relations

The Maldives and Pakistan enjoy historical and close relations based on mutual understanding, goodwill, and Islamic brotherhood. The Maldives established diplomatic relations with Pakistan on 26 July 1966, soon after gaining independence on 26 July 1965. 
 
Maldives also cooperates closely and shares common views with Pakistan both bilaterally and in the international fora on a range of international issues of mutual interest such as sustainable development, climate change, advancing multilateralism, and countering terrorism. As a regional partner, Maldives attaches great importance in maintaining the close and friendly relationship with Pakistan. The first resident diplomatic Mission in Islamabad was established on 31 July 2008. Both countries are members of the Commonwealth, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC).
